Ride a rigid-frame scooter over pavers or a patchy footpath and you'll feel every join in the concrete. Your wrists cop it, your knees cop it, and by the end of the commute you're tired for the wrong reasons. Suspension takes some of that impact out before it reaches your hands and body. Not all suspension is built the same, though. Across our wider electric scooters range you'll find front, dual and adjustable setups, and the right one comes down to how and where you ride.
Types of Electric Scooter Suspension Explained
Our range covers everything from basic front suspension through to dual and adjustable setups, so you can choose based on the surfaces you ride and how much control you want over the ride.

Type |
What it does |
Best for |
|
Front suspension |
Absorbs front-wheel impact only |
Lighter riders, mostly smooth urban paths with occasional bumps |
|
Dual (full) suspension |
Smooths both wheels front and rear |
Consistently rough surfaces, longer commutes, higher speeds |
|
Adjustable suspension |
Lets you tune firmness |
Heavier riders, mixed surface types, personal preference |
Mechanism matters too. Spring suspension has a softer, bouncier feel, while hydraulic shocks offer more controlled damping. Rubber cartridge systems are another option, particularly if you want something compact with little maintenance. Pair any of these with pneumatic tyres and you've got two layers of cushioning working together. Models like the Pure Air 5 Pro+ Suspension in our Pure Electric range show how front suspension can make an entry-level commuter noticeably more comfortable without piling on weight.
Quick way to choose:
- A rough footpath commute: dual suspension is the better bet.
- Mostly smooth paths: front suspension and pneumatic tyres may be enough.
- A mix of surfaces: adjustable suspension gives you more flexibility.
- Higher-speed riding: look for a setup that prioritises stability as well as comfort.
Do You Need a Suspension Scooter?
Smooth bike paths don't demand much from a scooter's suspension, so front suspension or decent pneumatic tyres should be enough. Start rolling over pavers, gravel or broken footpaths every day and dual suspension earns its keep. Heavier riders or anyone doing longer distances should look at adjustable or dual setups. A softer front-only shock can bottom out under load, which defeats the point. If you're chasing speed, suspension is standard on most performance electric scooters because stability at pace matters as much as comfort.
Suspension, Range and Power: How They Work Together
On rough surfaces, that cushioning also helps keep the scooter planted and easier to control. On long range electric scooters, dual suspension takes the sting out of a 40 or 50 km ride so it feels manageable rather than punishing. It also pairs naturally with dual motor electric scooters, where the extra power and higher top speeds need a chassis that stays planted. Segway, Kaabo and Inmotion build suspension into their mid and higher tiers for exactly that reason.

Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between front and dual suspension?
Front suspension only cushions the front wheel, so the rear still transmits bumps to you. Dual suspension smooths both wheels, which makes a bigger difference on consistently rough surfaces and longer rides.
Is dual suspension worth the extra cost?
If you ride mostly rough or mixed surfaces, or you're doing longer commutes, yes. For short trips on smooth paths, front suspension paired with pneumatic tyres is usually enough.
Do I still need suspension if my scooter has pneumatic tyres?
Pneumatic tyres take the edge off small vibrations, but they can't absorb larger impacts the way a spring or hydraulic shock can. The two systems work best together.
Which suspension type is best for heavier riders?
Adjustable or dual suspension. Adjustable lets you firm up the ride to stop it bottoming out, and dual spreads the load across both wheels.
Can I ride a suspension e-scooter off-road in Australia?
Rules vary by state and change over time. Check our state-based e-scooter law guide before riding anywhere other than private property.
