Is a Razor the right ride for you?

Razor's been the go-to family scooter brand for more than two decades. What most people don't realise is how broad the range now runs. It covers three very different types of riding, and the right pick depends on who's riding and where.

First up, classic kick scooters like the A5 Lux and Razor Jnr. These suit young riders learning balance and coordination, plus older kids and adults who want a fold-up ride for the footpath. Then there's the electric scooters, from the PowerCore E90 for smaller kids through to the E200 and XLR for confident older riders. Third group is the electric rides, and this is where Razor gets fun. Think Crazy Cart drift karts, Dirt Rocket motocross bikes and the Hovertrax self-balancing board.

Your decision comes down to three questions. How old and confident is the rider? Where will they actually use it, footpath, driveway, backyard or dirt? And are you buying a mode of transport or a piece of backyard fun? A Dirt Rocket MX350 is brilliant on grass and dirt but isn't a road ride. An A5 Lux is a genuine daily kick scooter.

Choosing your Razor

• Match the ride to the rider's age and confidence. A first-timer needs a kick scooter or the entry PowerCore, not a Dirt Rocket MX350 straight out of the box.
• Think about where they'll actually ride. Footpath and driveway suits kick and electric scooters. Crazy Cart and Dirt Rocket need open, private space.
• Factor in safety gear from day one. A properly fitted helmet is non-negotiable, and we'd add kids' helmets and pads to every first ride.

Four rider profiles, four honest recommendations, including where a Razor might not be the right fit.

Step 1: First-time young rider (ages 3-7)

At this age you want balance, coordination and confidence, not speed. A Razor Jnr. or the classic Razor A kick scooter is the sweet spot. Low deck, light weight and easy to control on the footpath or driveway. Kids learn how to push, steer and brake before you introduce any kind of throttle. It's also the ride that survives being dropped in the front yard on repeat. Keep the first sessions short, stick to smooth surfaces, and pair the scooter with a well-fitted helmet from day one. Skip the electric ride at this age, even if the packaging says the child is old enough.

Step 2: Confident kid ready for electric (ages 8-12)

Once your child is comfortable on a kick scooter, the PowerCore E90 or E100 is the natural next step. Push-button throttle, hand brake and speeds around 15 to 16 km/h. Fast enough to feel exciting without being scary. The E100 Glow adds under-deck lights for a bit of extra appeal. This is also the age we start seeing kids ask for a Crazy Cart Shift or Hovertrax. Both are great, just remember they're backyard rides rather than a way to get around. Match to how they'll actually use it.

Step 3: Older kids and teens wanting speed or off-road

For a confident 13+ rider, the E200 and XLR step up motor power, wheel size and top speed to around 24 km/h. If dirt and grass are the goal, the Dirt Rocket MX350 is the pick. Twist-grip throttle, chain-driven motor and genuine off-road manners. One honest note. If your teen actually wants to commute to school or the shops, a Razor electric scooter isn't the right tool. Step 4: Fun-focused riders

Some riders don't want transport at all. They want a toy that does something no other ride does. That's Crazy Cart territory. The drift wheels let you spin, slide and pivot in ways a normal go-kart can't. Riding a Razor safely in Australia

Two rules apply to every Razor, no matter which model you choose. Helmets are mandatory. Higher-powered electric rides like the Dirt Rocket and Crazy Cart are for private property only. They're not registered vehicles and shouldn't be used on roads, footpaths or in public parks.

For kick scooters and lower-powered kids' electric scooters, the rules vary by state. Here's a plain-English summary. Please confirm current local rules with your state transport authority before you ride.

• QLD: Personal e-scooters allowed on footpaths and bike paths at up to 12 km/h on footpaths and 25 km/h on separated paths. Minimum age 16 for higher-powered PMDs, helmet required.
• VIC: Private e-scooter use permitted on roads and paths under specific speed limits, helmet required, minimum age 16 for the faster class.
• NSW: Private e-scooter use on public land is restricted. Check current NSW Transport guidance before riding anywhere off private property.
• ACT: E-scooters allowed on footpaths and bike paths, 15 km/h on footpaths and 25 km/h on shared paths, helmet required, minimum age 12 (16 unsupervised).
• WA: E-rideables allowed on footpaths, bike paths and low-speed local roads, 10 km/h on footpaths and 25 km/h otherwise, helmet required, minimum age 16.
• SA / TAS / NT: Rules are being updated across these states. Confirm current requirements before use.

Whichever state you're in, a helmet plus wrist, elbow and knee protection is our standard recommendation for younger riders learning the ropes. Pair a first Razor with a set of elbow and knee pads and you'll dodge most of the early tumbles.

Razor scooters, questions answered

What age is a Razor scooter for?

Razor has models from around age 3+. Razor Jnr. suits ages 3–5, A suits 5+, A5 Lux and PowerCore E90/E100 suit 8+, and E200, XLR and Dirt Rocket MX350 suit 13+. Crazy Cart Shift starts at 6+ in low-speed mode and 8+ in high-speed mode, while Hovertrax suits 8+. Choose based on your child's size, confidence and riding ability.

What's the difference between a Razor kick scooter and a Razor electric scooter?

Kick scooters are human-powered, while electric scooters use a battery, motor and throttle. Razor A and A5 Lux models are lightweight, foldable and affordable; PowerCore E90, E100 and E200 add speed and range but are heavier, need charging and cost more. Start with kick for beginners, then move to electric when they're confident.

Is Razor a good scooter brand?

Yes, for kids and family riding. Razor has models for beginners, backyard fun and entry-level electric riding, with replacement parts and support available for popular models. For adult commuting, long range or high-performance riding, purpose-built commuter or performance e-scooter brands are a better fit.

What age is the Razor Crazy Cart for?

Crazy Cart Shift suits ages 6+ in low-speed mode and 8+ in high-speed mode, with a top speed of 13 km/h. The standard Crazy Cart is aimed at riders 9+. Both need a smooth, flat, open surface and aren't designed for grass, gravel, roads or footpaths. A helmet is essential; elbow and knee pads are recommended.

Are Razor electric scooters legal on Australian roads and footpaths?

It depends on the model and state. Australian e-scooter rules vary, so don't assume a kids' electric scooter can be used on public roads or footpaths. Razor Crazy Carts and Dirt Rocket bikes are private-property products and aren't intended for public roads or paths. Always check your current state transport authority guidance before riding publicly.

Can I get replacement parts for older Razor models?

How fast does a Razor A5, PowerCore E100 and Dirt Rocket MX350 go?

• Razor A5 Lux: Kick-powered, so top speed depends on the rider. Comfortable everyday pace on flat footpaths.
• PowerCore E100: Around 16 km/h top speed, with roughly 60 minutes of continuous ride time on a full charge.
• Dirt Rocket MX350: Around 22 km/h top speed, roughly 40 minutes of run time on grass or dirt, and a rider weight limit of about 63 kg.
