Lightweight & Portable Electric Scooters
Every scooter in this collection is a foldable electric scooter built to sit under 20 kg. That means you can lift it, carry it and stash it without doing your back in. We've curated the range for commuters pairing a scooter with the train or bus, apartment dwellers short on space, and travellers who want a compact electric scooter that drops into a car boot. If portability isn't your top priority, our broader electric scooters range opens up more options on power and range.
Portability vs Range: What Are You Actually Trading Off?
Lightweight is a real trade-off, not a hidden win. Getting a scooter under 20 kg usually means a smaller battery, a less powerful motor and a slimmer deck. You give up some range and top speed, and full suspension is uncommon at this weight. A collapsible electric scooter in this weight bracket is built for the short-to-medium trip, the multi-modal commute, and the flight of stairs at the end of it.
If your daily ride is long, hilly or mostly rough surfaces, you'll be happier on a long range electric scooter with a bigger battery, even if it's heavier to lift. The right question isn't "which is better". It's "how often am I actually carrying this thing?"
Who Is a Portable Electric Scooter Best For?
A portable e scooter suits you if:
- You combine your ride with a train, bus or ferry leg
- You live in an apartment, share house or unit with limited storage
- You travel often and want something that fits a car boot or luggage rack
- You carry your scooter up stairs or into the office regularly
- It's less suited to long hilly commutes, off-road tracks, or heavier riders who need more torque and a bigger deck. If you're new to riding and not fixed on an ultra lightweight folding scooter for adults, our entry commuter electric scooters are worth a look.
Weight, Fold Size and Fold Time
Across this collection, expect kerb weights from around 12 kg up to just under 20 kg. Most models fold in a few seconds using a single stem latch. Some add a secondary handlebar fold to shrink the packed size further. Folded, they'll typically slide under a desk, sit across a car boot or stand upright next to a train seat.
If you'll be lifting the scooter often, look for a carry handle or a shoulder strap point on the stem. Actual weights, folded dimensions and fold times vary by model, so check each product page for the exact figures before you buy.
What About Suspension and Ride Comfort?
Most sub-20 kg builds skip full suspension to save weight, running solid, honeycomb or air tyres instead. On smooth footpaths and shared paths that's fine. On rougher surfaces you'll feel more of the bumps. If comfort matters more than lift-ability, our electric scooters with suspension are the better fit.
Carrying and Storing Your Scooter
A folded compact electric scooter fits neatly beside a desk, in a hallway cupboard or across a car boot. If you're carrying yours on trains, buses or into offices regularly, a padded case protects the frame and keeps floors and clothes clean. Our scooter bags are cut to suit folded frames in this weight class.

Lightweight & Portable Electric Scooter FAQs
What's the lightest electric scooter for adults?
Adult kick-style e-scooters in this collection start from around 12 kg. Lighter models usually mean smaller batteries and shorter range, so weigh up how often you'll carry it against how far you'll ride.
Are lightweight electric scooters safe for daily commuting?
Yes, provided you match the scooter to your route. Lightweight builds handle short to medium commutes well. For long hilly routes, a heavier scooter with a bigger battery and stronger brakes is the safer daily choice.
What's the difference between a compact and a foldable electric scooter?
Compact refers to overall size. Foldable refers to the folding mechanism. Most compact electric scooters are foldable, but some foldable models are full-size scooters that simply collapse for storage.
Can I ride a foldable electric scooter on trains and buses in Australia?
Rules vary by state and by operator, and they change. Check with your local transport authority and see our state-based e-scooter law guide before you travel.
Can I ride a compact electric scooter on hills?
Short hills, yes. Sustained steep climbs will drain the battery quickly and can slow a single-motor lightweight scooter. If your commute is hilly, a dual-motor or long-range model is a better match.
