Are Electric Scooters the future of transportation?

The world is changing faster then ever before.

After over a century of internal combustion engine based transport we are finally starting to see progress with electric vehicle offerings from the likes of Tesla, Hyundai, Ford and more.

There has also been something of a micro mobility revolution in the past few years with electric bikes, skateboards and scooters increasingly emerging as an alternative to more traditional modes of transport.

There is a definite cool factor to electric vehicles. They zip along without a sound and deliver performance specs to make even the most ardent fossil fuel enthusiasts weep.

Without the need for bulky fuel tanks or cumbersome engines and transmissions, electric vehicle designers have been able to unleash their creativity and come up with sleek, futuristic designs straight out of a scene from a Sci-Fi movie.

So, with all of the benefits of battery powered locomotion why aren't we seeing more on the streets?

Costs of electric vehicles started high as battery technology and production volume capabilities were at an early stage. These costs have come down significantly thanks to manufacturers ramping up volume to keep up with increasing demand.

In 2020 we have reached a point where there are affordable transport options which can compete with non electric alternatives.

Looking the future it seems inevitable that electric powered cars, bikes, skateboards and scooters will be the status quo.

Transport regulations are typically slow to change and state and federal government law makers are struggling to keep pace with the changing landscape of micro mobility devices. Some states in Australia have already given the green light for use of such vehicles on footpaths or roads and it seems only a matter of time before the other states stop dragging their feet and join the electric movement.

With the global pandemic and financial turmoil affecting the world in 2020 there are good reasons to shift away from crowded public transport or expensive and fossil fuel powered vehicles in favour of greener and more socially distant modes of transport. Electric scooters are already rising in popularity in many high cities around the world and all signs point to this trend increasing in the next year or two.

The future of transportation is green, the future of transportation is affordable, and the future of transportation is electric.
