Queensland's E-Scooter Rebate Scheme: Your Guide to Saving on E-Mobility

The Queensland Government is taking a significant step towards cleaner and greener transport with the launch of the E-Mobility Rebate Scheme, focusing on e-scooters. This initiative is part of Queensland’s broader Zero Emission Vehicle Strategy 2022-2032, with a $1 million commitment to helping residents reduce the upfront cost of purchasing new e-scooters. If you've been considering switching to an e-scooter, now is the perfect time to take advantage of these savings.

Here’s everything you need to know about the scheme, including eligibility, rebate amounts, and how to apply.

Why the E-Mobility Rebate Scheme?

The E-Mobility Rebate Scheme aims to encourage Queenslanders to choose active and sustainable transport options like e-scooters. These devices help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, ease traffic congestion, and promote healthier, more active lifestyles.

This scheme is not just about making e-scooters affordable; it’s also about ensuring safety and quality. Eligible e-scooters must meet specific standards regarding speed limits, battery management, and compliance with Queensland’s nation-leading safety regulations for e-mobility devices.

Rebates Available

If you’re a Queensland resident and meet the eligibility criteria, you can access the following rebate:

  • $200 per eligible e-scooter

It’s important to note that funding is limited, and rebates will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. Once the $1 million fund is exhausted, no further rebates will be available, so it’s crucial to act quickly if you want to take advantage of this opportunity.

Program Administration

The Queensland Rural and Industry Development Authority (QRIDA) is managing the rebate program on behalf of the Department of Transport and Main Roads. QRIDA will handle applications, assessments, and the distribution of funds.

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for the rebate, there are a few key conditions:

  • Purchase Date: Your e-scooter must be purchased on or after 23 September 2024.
  • Retailer Requirements: The purchase must be made from a Queensland-based retailer or an Australian online business with a valid ABN.
  • Age and Residency: Applicants must be 18 years or older and a resident of Queensland. Proof of residency, such as a valid Queensland driver’s licence, will be required.

In addition, up to three individuals per household can apply for the rebate, but each person can only receive one rebate. However, businesses, including sole traders, are not eligible to apply for the rebate.

Please make sure you have your tax invoice, product manual, ID, and bank account details ready before beginning the process.

What Devices Are Eligible?

Not all e-scooters qualify for the rebate. The eligible devices must meet specific criteria to ensure safety and compliance with Queensland’s regulations:

  1. New Purchase: The e-scooter must be brand new and not used or sold prior to the purchase.
  2. Speed Limits: The e-scooter must be limited, by software or hardware, to a maximum speed of 25km/h under motorised power.
  3. Battery Management System: The device must include a battery management system for safer charging and operation.
  4. Charger Compliance: The charger must be registered with the Electrical Equipment Safety System (EESS) and carry the appropriate compliance mark.

For e-scooters, there are additional design requirements:

  • The e-scooter must be designed for use by one person.
  • It should have a footboard supported by wheels and be steered by handlebars.
  • The dimensions of the e-scooter must not exceed:
    • 1,250mm in length
    • 700mm in width
    • 1,350mm in height
    • 60kg in weight (unladen)

These specifications ensure that eligible e-scooters are safe and suitable for Queensland’s roads and pathways.
