Proper disposal of e-scooter batteries is crucial for safety and environmental protection. Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries pose a serious fire risk and must be disposed of correctly. Below are the official Australian Government guidelines for handling e-scooter batteries at the end of their life.
End of Life and Safe Disposal
- WARNING! Do not place in household garbage or recycling bin. Li-ion batteries present a serious fire risk and should not be placed into garbage or recycling bins. Li-ion batteries and devices containing them should be taken to a recycling service as soon as reasonably possible.
For e-micromobility vehicles where the battery is integrated:
- When disposing of this product or components of this product, check the applicable local waste and disposal laws.
For e-micromobility vehicles where the battery can be safely removed or separated:
- Please remove the battery from this device before disposing.
- When disposing of this product or components of this product, check the applicable local waste and disposal laws.
Undamaged Batteries
- Tape battery terminals before disposal. If you can safely remove the Li-ion battery from the product by hand, tape the terminals using a non-conductive tape like clear sticky tape.
- Safe disposal of undamaged batteries. Taped handheld Li-ion batteries can be recycled.

Damaged Batteries
- WARNING! Batteries that show signs of damage should be disposed of carefully as described below.
- Batteries that have had water or liquid ingress or have been submerged in water can also be extremely dangerous and should be treated as damaged.
- Where possible, remove them from any device or appliance, dry and wipe down terminals to prevent corrosion and short-circuiting.
Disposing of a Damaged Battery
- Place leaking or damaged (but not overheated or off-gassing) batteries in a clear plastic bag or container and take them to a Community Recycling Centre or a Household Chemical CleanOut event for disposal.
