End of Life and Safe Disposal of E-Scooter Batteries

Proper disposal of e-scooter batteries is crucial for safety and environmental protection. Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries pose a serious fire risk and must be disposed of correctly. Below are the official Australian Government guidelines for handling e-scooter batteries at the end of their life.

End of Life and Safe Disposal

  • WARNING! Do not place in household garbage or recycling bin. Li-ion batteries present a serious fire risk and should not be placed into garbage or recycling bins. Li-ion batteries and devices containing them should be taken to a recycling service as soon as reasonably possible.

For e-micromobility vehicles where the battery is integrated:

  • When disposing of this product or components of this product, check the applicable local waste and disposal laws.

For e-micromobility vehicles where the battery can be safely removed or separated:

  • Please remove the battery from this device before disposing.
  • When disposing of this product or components of this product, check the applicable local waste and disposal laws.

Undamaged Batteries

  • Tape battery terminals before disposal. If you can safely remove the Li-ion battery from the product by hand, tape the terminals using a non-conductive tape like clear sticky tape.
  • Safe disposal of undamaged batteries. Taped handheld Li-ion batteries can be recycled.
  • Visit the NSW EPA website to find out where you can safely recycle your battery:
NSW EPA – Safe Battery Recycling.

Damaged Batteries

  • WARNING! Batteries that show signs of damage should be disposed of carefully as described below.
  • Batteries that have had water or liquid ingress or have been submerged in water can also be extremely dangerous and should be treated as damaged.
  • Where possible, remove them from any device or appliance, dry and wipe down terminals to prevent corrosion and short-circuiting.

Disposing of a Damaged Battery

  • Place leaking or damaged (but not overheated or off-gassing) batteries in a clear plastic bag or container and take them to a Community Recycling Centre or a Household Chemical CleanOut event for disposal.
  • Visit the NSW EPA website to find out where you can safely dispose of your battery:
NSW EPA – Safe Battery Recycling.

Responsible Battery Disposal Protects You and the Environment

E-scooter batteries contain hazardous materials that can cause fires or environmental damage if not disposed of properly. By following these official guidelines, you can ensure safe handling and responsible recycling.
